“This subject matter demands an authentic approach so the stories are told only by those who participate. The films resist 'interpretation from above' but instead invite the viewer into a direct encounter. Like the rituals themselves each of the six films feels unique, but when viewed collectively we see powerful themes emerging — continuity, belonging and our evolving relationship with place and nature. Gatherings is a realisation of my long held desire to hold a mirror to these extraordinary events, and document them with authenticity and without prejudice."
